Medicine
Wheel Park features two solar calendars: A medicine wheel and a meridian
calendar. Other aspects of this unique 30-acre Park include Native
American burial mounds, a solar system model, woodland nature trials,
scenic overlooks of the Sheyenne River valley, and a perennial flower
garden. The medicine wheel’s circle measures 213 feet around.
Six spokes extending beyond this circle point to the horizon positions
of sunrises and sunsets on the first days of the four seasons. The
meridian calendar uses the shadow cast by a utility pole at local
apparent noon to indicate the time of the year. Three large rocks
mark the top of the pole’s shadow at the beginning of each season.
Twelve Native American burial mounds existing within the borders
of the park were first charted by T. H. Lewis on October 29, 1883,
and were used by the Plains Woodland Indians during periods dating
from the 500 to 2000 years ago. A Solar System model stretches from
the Sun at the center of the medicine wheel to Pluto, one third of
a mile away. Boulders representing the planets are spaced in exact
proportion to their distances from the Sun (1 foot = 3 million miles).
